Went to pick up my nephew and my 02 PT just did not sound right. When I got to his house I opened the hood and I could hear a little noise that sounded like it was coming from under the valve cover.
After I got him to his friends house I got some clunking sound from the engine. As I was limping it home the engine cut out and would not start. I went back with a code reader and got a camshaft position sensor code. I am thinking the timing belt broke but why would you get noise before the belt broke? Wouldn't it just stop? What would it take to change out the belt? Would a valve hit a piston? I just got the car back from the transmission shop a week ago. Cost me 2 grand for a rebuild. I hope I didn't just trash the engine. Last edited by scatgo; 28 Oct 2009 at 10:37 pm. |

Did they put in a new tensioner? I heard there was a problem with them. Let me know how it works out. I am worried that a valve might be bent.

well the PT is a non interference engine so No the piston did not hit a value and since you were going slow i don't think the valves would have hit each other so you should be good on that end
from all i have found out it is between $1000-$1200 for a timing belt usually they do the water pump and the tensioners at the same time and for just a little more i believe they can do the oil pump also. Im looking at changing mine OR maybe trading I just hate to pay that much for what should be a $400-$5000 dollar job the noise could have been if the belt had started to come apart and was slapping the housing The really sad part is there is nothing you can do to keep the belt in good shape it wil ware and at close to 90,000 it will need replacing that sucks |

Looks like it is the water pump. I noticed some water on the driveway under the timing belt side today. When I opened the radiator cap water came pouring out from under the belt cover. I guess the clunking noise was the pump falling apart. Could it be something else that went wrong in there?
If I use the kit below can I use the tensioner? It says first design. Wasn't there a issue with the tensioner that they changed?
