My 2001 problem...Help a brother out...

OK...here's my story.

2001 LE, manual, 85k miles.

About a month ago, I was pulling away from a light and she started stumbling, kinda like I was in the wrong gear...but I wasn't. Engine light started flashing. I pulled over and shut it off. Noticed a strong fuel smell. Waited a few minutes, fired it back up, and all was fine until this morning.

On my way to work....Coming off an interstate ramp, I hammered it, and she started stumbling again. Flashing engine light...strong fuel smell. Stalled in parking lot. Hard restarts...fuel smells...

I worked all day, then came out to car. Hard starts. Disconnected, then reconnected battery. Will run, but stumbles and bumbles. She evened out, and started running as normal.

Got out to interstate, check engine light flashed for a few minutes, power loss, stumbling.

Then it clears up, engine light goes out, and I make it 20 miles back to my driveway.

I checked for codes and all I get is the battery disconnect thing....of course!

The problem being intermittent is puzzling to me...

I'm thinking emissions (converter clogged)? (I know I have a small exhaust leak near the rear of the car.)

Maybe...Some kinda sensor...throttle position, cam/crank sensor...

I haven't owned the car quite a year yet, and haven't done anything to it besides a couple of oil changes.

What y'all think?

First how did you check for codes?? Did you do the key thing for codes

Key on-off-on-off-on-off should then show code...

Yes...I did the key dance and got the P1684 battery disconnected thing.

I guess I gotta wait until she messes up again and check for other codes?

Have you done plugs and wires? If not, a very good place to start - do not buy stock wires - they are crap - nearly any other brand is better.
Gap plugs at 0.040.
I'd try that first - it's not a lotta $, can't hurt, and may be the problem.
