Hi all. I have a '02 base model with no mods. I am about to change out the timin belt as I have 90K miles. Here's my questions:
I was planning on changing T-belt, T-belt idler, and T-belt tensioner as well. I came across this kit of PartGeek.com 02 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser T-Belt Tensioner Kit - Engine Mechanical - OES Genuine - PartsGeek Does anyone have any experience with this? Its going to cost me an extra 100bucks. Whats the benefit? |

Your buying a new timing belt cover which isn't really necessary. The old one can be modified just a bit to go over the new (changed in 03) tensioner. I had asked my mechanic about the new cover before doing the job and he said not to bother.
P.S. You might also want to change the water pump while doing the timing belt. They do wear out and it takes the same amount of time to take everything off as the timing belt does so might as well do it while you have every thing off. The serpentine and alternator belt (while they can be changed separately) also has 90K on them...while your doing the rest.

Don't think there's an exact number but we've been telling everyone that it should be changed around/before 100K to be safe.

There's only one person that I've ever read about on this forum that recommends the changing of the oil pump. Got to admit that I didn't think about having mine changed when I did the belt but took all the other recommendations on the water pump, serpentine and alternator belt and tensioner.

It was upgraded in 2003.
