Angry 2003 Base PT Engine Electrical Problems

Hello everyone. I am in desperate need of help. I have a '03 base model pt. I recently changed the alternator and battery. My wife was on her way to work when she lost all gauges, turn signals, radio everything. When she came to a stop, the car died. I jumped her car with my pickup and followed her to work. After work, her car started fine. But, halfway home, same thing. I jumped it again and she made it home. The next morning I went outside to start both vehicles and turn the heaters on. The car started just fine but died somewhere around 15 min later with no power left in the battery. Autozone and O'Rilley checked the atlernator and charging system and found nothing. What now?!?! I'm about to pull my hair out!!

Start with the simple stuff first. The fact that you lose everything and the new battery has lost all its charge indicates that there probably is a bad connection to the battery. Check both the positive and negative battery leads for looseness, corrosion, dirt, etc. Check both ends of the leads. When you jump the vehicle you are apparently providing enough voltage to momentarily overcome the voltage drop caused by the bad connection. Either that or depending how you attach the jumpers you may be bypassing the bad connection. The fact that this started after you changed the battery and alternator could mean that you disturbed an already marginal connection in this area or maybe didn't get everything reconnected well enough. The battery cables on the PT are pretty wimpy to begin with...after 6-7 years of service...well...if in doubt replace them. There have been posts on here about problems with the battery cables.

Mr. Carl48,
You know, I never thought about the battery cables. I noticed that there was no corosion on the terminal ends but I never thought that the cables themselves could be the problem. I will buy and install them in the morning and let you know if that fixed the problem. Thank you for your input. You have been a great help.

Agree with Carl, and it's not expensive and can't hurt to change cables.
The other possibility is the ignition switch.
Lots of junk on the key ring?

OK, hopefully the cables either cleaned or replaced get you going. If you still have problems, according to your post, they appear to have started after the new battery...if that is the case, it is not unheard of for a battery to have internal problems (ie--dead cell, plate or bus separation)...even new batteries can have problems...just a thought. But make sure all connections to battery, alternator, grounds are good before condemning the battery or any other component. Good luck.

Return to where you got the battery, have them check the battery before changing out the cables. If the battery isn't any good you don't need to mess with the cables.
