Question Engine Won't Turn Over

At first, I thought it was a bad battery.

Firestone installed a new battery for me and it still won't turn over.

One of two things....

Timing Belt--94,000+ miles on current belt--hoping and praying that is what it is.

Or Engine is losing compression....which I am told can be costly...don't quite understand what losing compression means or what would cause it and why it's such a high ticket item to fix. Any explaining would be much appreciated. While I am a computer and math geek, mechanical stuff is a mystery to me.

So, starter turns but engine doesn't catch?
Engine light on? Should be. Turn key on off three times and get codes in the odometer area - they are clues.

Ask around - try auto parts stores - for a mechanic - when you here the same name twice - try them.

How was car before the problem? Running okay? If so, doubt lack of compression, and lean toward timing belt - you're at the mileage when they go.

Compression is the pistons coming up and compressing fuel/air mix to ignite it - lack of compression is caused by worn rings (seal the piston to inside of cylinder) or valve problems - very rarely will lack of compression mean car won't start - just lack of power.

Google "otto cycle" to get a good idea of how engine works.

It tries to turn over but won't. The battery was bad....$129 to get a new one installed.

It ran fine most of the time....idled rough at times like at the drive through...sometimes at traffic lights...

You're not clear - starter turns or not? Unless the starter turns, timing belt can't be your problem.
The rough running is probably plugs and wires - ever have them changed?
You didn't reply about check engine light - is it on?

the lights that come on when you turn the keys light up

the engine tries to turn over but won't starter is turning--cranks but won't start tries to start but won't---sounds like my old Ford Escort did when its timing belt went out

plugs and wires have not been changed...

I am mechanically challenged

Then timing belt is a good bet.
If the place you have it at now gave you that "low compression" crap - take it somewhere else.
By all means have plugs and wires done with timing belt.
Also get accessory belt done - save you a visit later.

Uh btw, what do spark plugs do

what does an acessory belt do

at intervals, the digital read out on the Radio/clock go out and the horn stops working...all other stuff including radio/cd player continue to work

I was gonna jump in Don but it's getting too technical for me.

A lot of it is too technical for me.

Now, if it was computer programs like MS Office, then I'd be handy as can be.
