Default Transmission failiure

I have an '01 Limited edition with a 5sp manual. Driving home last night when the wheels locked up, and a loud crashing/banging could be heard/felt from the engine compartment. The cabin then filled up with what I'm assuming was clutch smoke. The engine kept running fine, however, even with the clutch pedal all the way out and the engine running, the gear lever could be placed in any gear without anything happening. Anyone have an idea what failed here because I'm stumped!

Any grinding when you move lever?
If it were clutch - wouldn't gears grind when you moved lever?
Definintely doesn't sound cheap...

That's why I was thinking maybe his shifter linkage broke. Can't explain the smoke though... and I don't think there are any fluid lines for the manual (or is there to a cooler?)

Nope, no grinding at all. The lever shifts as though the engine was off and the clutch out. I can feel the lever 'notch' into gear...

Thinking more on it, I'm thinking it may just be clutch - it's totally gone, so engine is completely disconnected from gearbox.
I hope the BANG (clutch plates breaking?) didn't take out any casings...

That's what I'm hoping for but how would it explain the wheels locking out?
