Default bypassing air conditioner compressor?

Ok, The '03 PT that my brother got over the weekend has been sitting for approx. 14 months. he threw a new battery in it and it started right up, then it started smoking until the belt broke. Now it doesn't have power steering, or air. anyway, my guess is that the compressor is frozen... can you just bypass the compressor, and just have power steering (he is still in college and doesn't want to spend a ton of money)?

I did this on my cavalier by just going to autozone, and told them i wanted a belt for the cavalier w/o air conditioning and then just didn't wrap it around the compressor.

He is going to bring it over next week to start working on it in the garage, so i will have a better idea then of what is going on. any one have any tips or tricks or advice for a new PT owner?

I'm not a mechanic but looking at the belt routing (compressor on bottom right) I don't see how to bypass the compressor.

MY technical suggestions are given in GOOD FAITH without total guarantee, if in doubt go to a garage.

Sorry, don't know. Maybe they have a no-nothing pulley to take the place of the compressor.

The belt at Autozone is 51.5 inches without A/C, 55 inches with A/C, so maybe they did put a small pulley in place of the compressor.

ok, got the car here, and found out that the compressor pulley is very hard to turn. took the clutch off and I am now unable to remove the pulley.

Is the pulley replaceable?

is there a puller that you use to get the pulley off?

the center part of the clutch spun no problem, so the compressor should be fine, i think its just the bearings in the pulley.

Ok, got the pulley off...

pulley is slightly dented, it was stuck on there pretty good. so it looks like I will need a new A/C clutch and pulley assembly? any good suggestions?

I'm not sure if you can get the clutch by itself.... If so then that sounds like the way to go. If you can turn the compressor then you are good.

Haven't bought for the PT, but used to be able to buy just an A/C clutch.

Why not try to get a junkyard a/c compressor?
You don't even need it to work just to have a good pulley.
A compressor on an engine removed from the vehicle and exposed to the elements should be cheap.

not sure how they did it becasue i cant see in engine well but i can see that there is no belt around the ac pulley and vehicle operates ok.

ac relay was also removed
