Default 2005 engine into a 2001?

Has anyone tried it? I tired doing a search fort the differences between the two but the results did not give me what I needed to know. From what I can tell so far the 2005 was lacking EGR, simple fix was to swap the parts over from the 01 engine. Beyond that it looks like the crank position sensor is in a different spot and the camshaft has a different number of magnets in it for the cam position sensor.
The biggest question is can the 01 computer run this engine? Someone else bolted the motor in the car and I got the task of cleaning up what was left behind.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum.
Clearly if you replace problematic parts with '01 parts, the computer won't know the difference.

It will not work. The main issue id the crankshaft tone wheel. The 01 and 05 have major differences. Different # of teeth. Also the 05 head does not have provisions for egr.

That is everything I needed to know right there. Although someone did manage to bolt the egr valve to the 05 head
