Unhappy PT Dead - Need Help!

Well, I just recently bought my 2001 PT Cruiser Limited and everything was great for the first month. I was delivering newspapers one morning and it suddenly lost power and then would not start back up after I shut it off. The engine cranks, but does not start. I checked for fuel pressure and it seems good, so I am leaning more towards an electrical problem.

Additional Details: 147k Miles, changed the oil the day before....but drove it that night and the next morning before the problem. All fluid levels are where they should be.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forums.
Was the timing belt ever changed?
That would be my guess with your mileage.
Is the engine light on? I bet you get codes for cam & crank sensor.

Thanks Quicksilverdon.

I am not sure if the timing belt has ever been changed. The check engine light is not on. I did scan for codes though and nothing came back. I will certainly check the timing belt though.

Does the engine sound like it's under no strain while cranking up?

147k is way over due for a timing belt so keep your fingers crossed

My old Toyota used to like to blow the fuel pump fuses once in a while, I only fell for that trick once.

Question Re: PT Dead - Need Help!

The engine sounds normal to me when trying to start.

I just recently purchased the Cruiser, so I have no idea if the timing belt has ever been replaced. The only thing I can say is that there were no error codes when I hooked up the tester.

I am thinking maybe the coil or cam sensor? Anyone have thoughts on that? And....to test the coil, is it necessary to remove the intake manifold? I was looking at the manual and it seems that it is indicating that it has to be removed.

Coils rarely go bad - check for spark - take out a plug, hold it with insulated pliers, have "arm" of plug on engine block and look for spark.

My money is on the timing belt..pull back the cover with your fingers or a screwdriver and have someone crank the engine..good luck!

I will try checking the belt tonight. The only thing I was thinking is that it would have produced an error code if the belt went, but....maybe not!
