Question 2002 PT Cruiser Engine Swap

Hi all. I'm trying to purchase an '02 Cruiser with a supposedly bad engine. (From a Salvage Yard) They're telling me that the engine is a "2.4 PT Cruiser only" engine. I'm having a hard time believing that Chrysler designed an engine specifically for the PT Cruiser. I'm guessing it's the same block as the Stratus / Sebring? (I'm actually hoping it only needs a timing belt...)

Can anyone shed some light on the interchangability?

Thanks in advance.

You're sorta right - blocks are the same, tho they have changed over time - but the SRT-4 Neon, for example, while it has the same block, has a different intake, and different exhaust.
It's tight in those engine bays.

I just read through the 2.4 Engine builder document. It appears that the biggest difference would be the oil pan. They had to relocate the filter to make it fit in the PT Cruiser. I'm guessing any 2002 2.4 would be the same block. Just need to use the PT Oil Pan / Intake / Exhaust / Etc.

Yeah, I read that. I still think as long as I stay with a 2002 block I'll be ok. I guess I'll find out soon. I was able to buy it. It's a 2002 Limited, 120k miles, 5 speed. Someone has put aftermarket wheels, and a Hurst shifter in it. Bought it for $1300.00 - I'll let y'all know what I find.

Why don't you pull the PT engine apart and see what the problem is? Maybe it can be saved and rebuilt.

Well, I removed the oil pan and checked it out. It apears to have ripped the bottom out of the #4 piston. I bought a 46k motor out of a 2001 Sebring, and just got the engine pried out of my Cruiser. Now, I need to make the Sebring engine look like a PT Cruiser engine. It appears that the only thing that matches is the block assembly itself..... I have to swap all of the brackets, EGR, Oil Pump, Oil Pan, Intake, Exhaust, Etc, Etc....

This ought to be a hoot!!

Question Re: 2002 PT Cruiser Engine Swap

I'm curious about how the 2002 pt turned out and if I can make it a little easier by using a 2002 neon engine
