Default Camshaft/Crankshaft Synchronization Procedure

Anyone familiar with this ?

Was looking over an AutoZone manual about head bolt torque sequence , and ran across this ...

"After all components are installed on the engine, a DRBŪ scan tool is necessary to perform the camshaft and crankshaft timing relearn procedure."

The last three steps say ..

7.Fill the cooling system.
8.Turn the ignition switch ON , and access the -miscellaneous- screen.
9.Select the -re-learn cam/crank- option, then follow the instructions on the scan tool screen

My list ended at 7 ...

This is a new one on me guys , Could someone go into more detail , that scan tool sounds kinda pricy , is there another way to initiate this proccess .

Is it realy neccessary , cant remember seeing one word about it in all of my prior research ...

Default Re: Camshaft/Crankshaft Synchronization Procedure

I would also like to know about this procedure. Is it necessary to hook it up to a DRB scan tool after replacing headgasket and timing belt without
disconnecting the negative on the battery? I've looked online and its a dealer item only.... or you can buy one for $7-8k!
