Exclamation Removing the battery hold down?

I have a 2004 GT with a seriously dead battery. I went to remove it and found that it is held down by a black metal bar across the length of the battery. Try as I might I cant find a way to remove it. Looking online people have advised to take off the air filter but my battery is already clearly visible. I am sure I am just missing something stupid, any advice?

Thanks,
Chimp

In that video the air filter covers the battery. In my 04 GT the battery is clearly visible with a heavy black metal bar holding it down.

How do you change a battery on a 2004 Pt Cruiser 2.4 liter turbo?

AIR CLEANER HOUSING

REMOVAL

View Full Image

1. Disconnect the air inlet hose (Fig. 16).
2. Pull air cleaner housing straight up to remove.
3. Remove the inlet duct from the air cleaner housing.

INSTALLATION
The air cleaner housing attaches to the inner fender in front of the driver's side strut tower (Fig. 16). An ambient air duct supplies underhood air for the engine. It attaches to the lower air cleaner box.

Make sure that the rubber grommets, for the lower pins, are in place when reinstalling the air cleaner housing. The rubber grommet for the PDC bracket must be installed also (Fig. 16).

1. Make sure ignition switch is in OFF position and all accessories are OFF.
2. Open hood.
3. Remove the air cleaner housing.
4. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable then the positive cable.

2. Lift battery out of battery tray and remove from vehicle.
3. Remove thermal guard from battery.

INSTALLATION
When replacing battery, the thermal guard MUST be transferred to the new battery.

1. Install battery in vehicle making sure that the thermal guard is present and battery is properly positioned on battery tray
2. Install battery hold down clamp, making sure that it is properly positioned on battery.
3. Install battery cables on battery posts. Install battery positive cable first.
4. Tighten clamp nuts securely.
5. Install air cleaner housing.
6. Close hood.
7. Verify operation of vehicle and systems.

I don't have a turbo but if you take out the air cleaner box you should be able to disconnect the bar that holds the battery. That post by me above your post was copied from a certified Chrysler mechanic.

There are three links stickied to the top of this forum that give you options to download service and repair manuals for the PT. Download the one for yours, it gives you all the information you need.

You do have to remove the air filter. When you do you will be able to see a single large bolt. Take it out and the bar will come off.

Wow! This is making changing a battery look extremely hard and it's pretty easy.

My haynes shows the one large bolt holding the battery down , but THIS IS NOT ON AN 04. THe orginal poster is asking the same question I would on my 04. There is a curved steel rod that goes across a plastic doohickdey and the ends diappear into the bowels of the car. On my turbo, the airbox is nowhere near it, neither are the pipes.Looks like you have to get under the car.
