Default 2001 PT Overheating

HI,

I have a 2001 PT cruiser that is overheating but only during the time when the A/C is running. The fan does run when the motor comes up to temp and when I turn the A/C on. Also, if I am going down the highway with the A/C on it doesn't overheat but if I am driving in the city it does. But, if I am driving in the city without the A/C on it doesn't overheat. Any ideas? From what I have read on here it sounds like maybe a high speed relay problem but how do I test it to make sure the fan is running on the high speed range. Thanks in advance.

Mike

Mike,

If you check almost all the other overheating problems, the main cause is the radiator fan. It should be on as son as you turn the A/C on no matter what the temperature of the coolant is. As things warm up, the fan switches to high speed. You could have either speed not working. The brushes burn out inside the motor. You can rebuild it yourself or buy a new motor and replace the whole housing with fan attached.

Meanwhile do a search on the top of this forum on "overheating" or "A/C problems".
