Question Timing Belt Change?

Hello All,

First time posting, but I have used all of your resources alot in the past. So hello!

The reason why I am posting is becuase I bought a PT cruiser a little less than 2 years ago, and it had about 160k on it. It is a 2004 PT Cruiser base model. I know that the belt needs to be replaced every 120k, at least that is what the manual says.

I am not sure if it was replaced around 120k, and I decided to open up the cover to check the belt my self. I can clearly read the barcodes on the belt, and the belt looks like it is in great shape. I tried to see if I could see the teeth, but the opening is pretty small. I ran my fingers down the teeth to see if there was any damage, but couldnt feel anything. The next thing I did was have someone start it this way I could see the entire belt for any damage, I had them start and stop it a few times to see the entire belt.

I figure the belt was replaced around 120k, b/c what I have read online is the belts usually break soon after the replacement window.

I wanted to get all your inputs to see what you think?

Thanks in advance!

After 100k your on borrowed time, I would assume it wasn't done because if it was they would have said something it would have been a major selling point. It sounds like you have a good PT on your hands with that kind of mileage, if I was you I would get the belt and the water pump done ASAP unless you can prove without a doubt it was done.

Thanks Dino,

Yeah, I see where you are coming from, the only problem is I bought it from an auction. I have a bunch of paperwork for the car at home, and I am going to look thru it tonight.

I also called around to a few places to get prices, and it looks like it is going to run me about $800. I a skeptical about putting that into my PT. The reason is that I bought it for $2500, and I rather put $800 into a new car especially at 170k.

Thanks for the input!

Yeah I totally understand, but if you do the belt and water pump the engine could give you another 100k but if you don't it could very much leave you stranded out on the rode, because when it breaks it just breaks with no warning.

If you found a place that will do it with parts for $800, and they seem to know what they are doing (did it before) than you got a good deal. We tell everyone that the job of the belt, water pump and tensioner runs anywhere between $800 and $1200.

Hey All,

Thanks for the info!

I have some good news, I was going thru the paper work in my glove box, and I found the original owners number. It was nice to find that he lives in my town :P Long story short, the timing belt broke on him around 100k, and he got a new engine with 5,000 miles on it. I was pretty stoked by that, since it is a newer engine, and the engine roughly has about 75k on it. That explains why the belt looked so new, well not 170k miles on it.

I am planning on still getting the belt done, but going to wait off on it and save up the money to pay it off. Planning on getting it done in the next 5000-10000 miles. What do you guys think? I figure I should do it before 90k to be safe.

Thanks again!

Tristan

I would think you could probably wait a little longer than that, about the 90-100K mileage mark.

Being on this forum for quite a long time, I've only heard of one or two owners that have ever had to have head work done when the timing belt broke. It's extremely rare that an engine had to be replaced. It's a non-interference engine which means the vales can't hit the pistons but the valves can hit each other but rarely do. You should be cautious, but don't be scared.
