Default autobox fluid leak

Can anybody help with this?
I have a 2002 2.0 Touring and have a leak from the transmission.
My local dealer says it's coming from 'the solenoid valve unit' which apparently
has an electrical switch component and the leak is from around this.
'No problem' I said 'how much is a new gasket/o ring?'
'Not possible' he replied and then quoted me a comedy price for a replacement unit. It would seem it isn't a repairable unit, just remove and replace.
Has anyone out there had this happen and if so what did you do?
Any help would be appreciated

First of all I would like to say that I have not had this issue yet at 131,000 miles, but it is a common issue.

The gasket is part of the solenoid, and the solenoid itself cannot be cleaned, it will just cause more leaks. Assuming you are from Europe (2.0L is non-domestic), you should still be able to find the solenoid cheap off of eBay: A604 SOLENOID BLOCK 1989 UP CARAVAN,VOYAGER tested: eBay Motors (item 280512212906 end time Jun-24-10 15:41:03 PDT)

Make sure that you have the 41TE transmission in your car. If you would like, I can provide you with instructions for install, if you feel you would like to install it yourself.

Thanks for the reply, yes I'm in England and yes I would appreciate some pointers as to the install.
I do most of my maintenance myself, only electrical stuff goes to a specialist.
So long as I don't have to remove the engine!!

The instructions for the install can be found here (you may have to create a free account to view it, this is a trusted site): PTCrew.com - Learn it or Burn it.

Please tell me if you have any more questions.
