Default Unresolved Error Code P0171

2001 PT Cruiser Limited Edition. I need help in a bad way! I have done so much work to resolve this code based on your suggestions with no luck. That darn code keeps popping up. I have done the following:

2 New OEM oxygen sensors
Upper intake manifold gaskets
Lower intake manifold gaskets
Replaced dry rotted hose
Spark plug gaskets
Valve cover gasket (there was a leak in driver's side corner)

Any other ideas? Could it be fuel injectors or fuel pump? I did notice the other day that my air filter box looks like it is supposed to have 4 "tabs" on the back but only the middle 2 are present. Please help! I will be moving to another state in the next month and need to resolve this!

Thanks!

If it was mine i would take it to Auto-zone, pepboys, etc., etc. and have them run the code. There machines will take them deep enough to tell them and you how to fix the problem. That would have been the first thing I would have done instead of throwing parts at the motor. The dealer is also a source for this diagnosis type step. Just let them tell exactlly what is wrong and you can decide which way to go from there especially since you seem to be under a time constraint. This will give you a quick, concise answer.

From PT Do-It-Yourself.net:

P0171 - 1/1 Fuel System Lean - A lean air/fuel mixture has been indicated by an abnormally rich correction factor.

There are a number of possible causes including:

Restricted Fuel Supply Line
Fuel Pump Inlet Strainer Plugged
Fuel Pump Module
O2 Sensor
O2 Signal Circuit
O2 Return Circuit
O2 Sensor Heater Operation
Throttle Position Sensor Sweep
MAP Sensor Operation
ECT Sensor Operation
Engine Mechanical Problem
Fuel Contamination/Exhaust Leak

The majority of tests performed to rule out each component require the use of a DRB III scan tool and or special equipment which most owners do not have, therefore your ability to DIY will be limited. However the diagnostic that I provided will give you some idea on which areas to focus on.

Thanks for the advice. I went to Autozone this morning and he ran the scan for me. He said that based on the information that it seemed that 1 or more of the fuel injectors is not working correctly. Does this seem accurate?

Thanks!

Steven
