Unhappy Engine surging at 4000 RPMs along with shaking at 2000 RPMs...

Hello there,

Hopefully someone will be able to help me on this forum. Recently I have had a few problems that are troubling me about my 2001 2.4L PT Cruiser (non Turbo).

Recently whenever I start the car, the car vibrates at 2000 RPMS and close to 3000RPMs. I list these two points since this is when the vibration is most dominant. I am reluctant in saying i it is the engine, perhaps you guys have some experience with this. Keep in mind that this vibration happens when the car is both stationary and moving.

Another problem that happened at the same time as the one above is the engine surge at close to 4000 RPMs. When attempting to smoothly depress the gas pedal, at the cusp of 4000RPMs the RPMs fluctuate between this position and 1800RPMs. Like above, this problem happens when the car is both stationary and moving.

Thanks for your help guys. If we can find out whats wrong it would really save my life.

How about some more information and your PT. It's a 2001, what kind of maintenance has been done? Last time for plugs and wires. What is your mileage? Anything added (performance parts) to the car?

The engine was replaced at 70,000 miles due to overheating. There are 130,000 miles on the car now with the used engine we found which had 50,000 miles on it previously. The plugs were replaced last year around this time when the odometer read 100,000 miles. The wires have not been, I assume they are the same age as the new engine. We also replaced the fuel injectors last week.

No performance parts have been added to the vehicle whatsoever.

I suppose it may be important to note that it seems like the car has no power whatsoever. Now I realize this is not really a performance vehicle, however when climbing steep hills on the highway, with the pedal to the metal I can usualy only attain speeds of 55-60mph.

Well, the first thing to do is change the plug wires. While your under the upper manifold I'd have the compression checked. You need to find out if all four cylinders are good.
