Default fan low speed

I have 2003 PT Cruiser. When cold (let's say in the morning) AC is not efficient. The air is not that cold. I have checked the fan. One morning Low Speed was on, another morning it was not. Is it motor or relay?

Very seldom to we ever hear of the relay going bad. It's usually always the fan. start the car in the morning when the engine is cold without the A/C on. Open the hood so you can hear/see the fan. It shouldn't be running. Now turn on the A/C and the fan should come on with the compressor.

That doesn't test both speeds of the fan but if it doesn't come on when the A/C is turned on, at least you know one speed isn't working and the fan motor/ fan assembly needs to be replaced to repaired

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and advice. I did exactly what you have just suggested. One morning (when the engine was cold) the fan was running, next morning (again the engine was cold) it was not.

You didn't say if the A/C was on when you did your test but the fan should ALWAYS come ON when the compressor is running.

Try something else. You say it's not very efficient. Get up to speed, over 35mph, that's when the fan shuts off by the computer because enough air is coming through the front end to cool everything off. Does the A/C seem cold? Does it seem less cold when you slow down or come to a stop?

If so, your fan is probably your problem.

YES, at a speed above around 40 MPH A/C works fine. When slowing down, no cold air.
