Default Computer/PCM removal

I posted this in a thread about code P0601 but decided to make a different thread and hope someone can shed some light on this...should be easy.

n00b question here.

I'm trying to help my elderly father with his 2001 PT Cruiser non turbo issue.

Code P0601. PCM needs to be replaced and dealer wants $800 +.

I found him one online programmed to his vehicle and will install it myself.

I know the location of the PCM.

How hard is it to remove ? Any "how to's" ? How many bolts and their location etc ?

I live in a different town than he does so I'd like to have an idea how to go about it before I actually get there and then wish that I'd brought another tool or so.

I've done this in other vehicles but never on a PT.

Thanks for any help.

Haven't done it myself, but according to this site, a couple bolts holding it on, disconnect the connectors at the bottom and that's it. Don't forget to take off the negative battery terminal first.

How do you change a computer on a 2001 pt cruiser? - Yahoo! Answers

Thank you. I did a Google Search and nothing came up as to how to actually do it...sounds easy and thanks again.

very simple to remove but the problem you may have is that they need to have certain things preprogramed hopefuly the one you found is. If not sure if it was they would need vin # and several other personal info on the car. Good luck

At lease the VIN and your mileage has to be programmed into the new PCM.
