Undiagnosed noise

My 2001 Cruiser has a mysterious noise appearing to come from rear of vehicle, sounds like loud, continuous blowing across top of a bottle, it is infrequent/very intermittent and I haven't been able to identify any driving condition/circumstance common to every time I hear it. Often but not always I am stopping and starting in a slow moving queue of traffic and often but not always it stops when I touch the brake but starts again when the brake is released. I first heard it at around 30,000 miles but have now done 43,000 and it doesn't seem to be getting any more frequent or persistant. I've said all this to my dealership, they took a look, including brakes but "found nothing". Can anyone help?

Ah, those annoying 'PT Cruiser Gnomes' I see.

Seriously, this is one of those things that is going to drive you crazy for as long as you have the car. The dealer will always say they cannot duplicate it, so take the srvice advisor with you and make sure he hears it too.That at least will document that it does exist in their eyes.
