Default Wierd issue with engine not starting

Got into the car yesterday and turned the key and got a wierd clicking noise, the stereo and dash lights came on but then the dash lights would go off again if the brakes were depressed. I tried the 3 turn trick for the engine code but no code was given. I then decided maybe it was the battery so attempted a jump start, still the same problem. We then had a mechanic come round and check it out, not the starter motor either, but he did a little sequence of depressing the brakes and leaving the key turned to Auxillery. He also had the headlights on and they were very dim, then all of a sudden they went to full brightness and he turned the ignition on a the car started, he tried again several times and it worked. He did not charge us but advised me to look on the web for the cause as he was unsure what it was, especially with no engine codes. I tried to start the car again this morning and it had the same problem, I could not get it to work, hence the post here.

I think you guessed it right the first time, battery. Do you have places you can take it to so they can test it out? Most of our auto stores will check it out for free.

My wife just called me and said that she got into the car and the needles on the gauges were moving up and down very quickly on their own, the key was not in the ignition??? Would this still be a battery issue?

Yep, according to what has been reported, the gauges start acting erratic.

Thats good news then, I will buy a new battery and replace it tonight, maybe I dont need to spend lots of money on a mechanic now.

Also check the ends of the battery cable to make sure they are on solid. You may have to check the ones to the starter as well.
