Default 2003 Diesel PT Cruiser help!!

Hi there,

i've just joined here, so please be gentle, hehe..

We're from Belfast in Northern Ireland.

My wife has a manual (non-auto) 2003 PT cruiser CRD touring (diesel model) with a slight problem..
maybe you guys can shed some light on it.

The car has'nt been started in a little while as she was off work, etc. having our
2nd son.. aww.. lol.

It has a completely dead battery..
Anyways, I connected my diesel VW Passat to it via the jump leads, correctly 'positive' from mine to the jump start point in the pt
& the 'minus' from mine to the engine lid latch.. got a little sparking as you should..

Tried cranking the PT, but only got a clicking sound..
To me, it sounds as if the starter motor is sticking or even the solenoid.

I clambered under the car, removed the engine covers & tapped the starter motor a little to see if I could manage to free it, but to no avail..

I have no workshop manual on the Diesel as they are not available, I only have the petrol version of the book.

Firstly is there a solenoid in the diesel model engine?
Can this model of the car be jump started? and would this free the starter motor?

If not, can it be towed back up the hill again? lol..

Thanks in advance guys for any replies.

Kind regards,

Davy

Welcome to the Forums.
THe clicking is the solenoid - not enough power....
The diesel battery is under the seat, right? So where are you connecting? + Post by air cleaner??
I would try the - to the engine block itself - usually theres an "O" ring cast in to hoist the engine - try that....
You have the other car running when you're doing the jumping, right?

When my battery died and I tried jumping from my wife's car I had a heck of a time getting a good connection on the leads. I had to wiggle the ground cable quite a lot to get a good connection and when I did, the PT jumped to life. All it took was the right connection. As QSD just said, try a different place for the ground cable.

You may just need to leave the cables on for a few minutes before trying to start it. If all else fails, hook the cables directly to the battery, not the post, if you can. Let your VW run for several minutes to charge the battery up a little.

Hi guys,
cheers for the welcomes & also the replies..

Latest -
Tried other connection points for the negative side,
but again just got the clicking sound like a sticking starter motor or solenoid switch??

Rang the local dealer, he said i've not got enough power to even turn the starter
sufficiently..

So, I located the battery (under the front passenger seat)
its a sealed gel item by Mopar.
I connected the jump leads directly from the battery on my running VW to the battery of the PT.
Turned the ignition key, again.. just the clicking sound

How do i bump start (push start) this car... as the clutch pedal needs to be depressed to operate the ignition start??
or does this not matter as i'll be getting a push, lol..

anyone any other ideas or do i bite the bullet and purchase a new battery..
only problem is they're approx 120.00 + vat.. over $200!!

again, many thanks for your help.

Davy

We can tell you are overseas because of the diesel & the 4.2.

The way we push start cars here is to have someone inside the car, push the clutch in, put the transmission in 2nd, turn the key on, have someone push you and when you get up to speed, let the clutch out. That is the way I used to do it with a balky car.

Doesn't matter, as you'll not be engaging the starter with a bump start - I always used 3rd gear

It would seem either:
1) The battery in the PT is so dead, it pulls down the battery from the jumping car.... hook up the jumper car and let it sit that way for a few minutes before trying to crank the PT
- or -
2) The starter motor could have died... Usually they start to act up before they die, but not always...
