Default egr valve

I had some questions about replacing an EGR valve on a 2001 non turbo engine.
My check engine light came on last night and the code p0401 and code p1684 came up when I checked.
Does the EGR valve just get replaced after 65,500 miles or can it be cleaned.
It doesn't seem like too difficult of a job but if I replace it myself will the check engine light and the code both go out or does a dealer need to reset the code. Thanks for any help.
Our little PT has been a very reliable and fun car and I want to keep it going.

All the codes go out if you take the negative batter terminal off for about 5-10 minutes. It resets the computer and clears all the codes.

That's not necessary. OBD-II systems will automatically clear codes that have been corrected. The light will go out when the problem is corrected, and the computer will clear the codes after so many successful starts without detecting the problem again.

Or to facilitate the process, do what Crewzin says and pull the battery cable off.

I think it's replace, but you could try cleaning.
If light doesn't go out, remove battry cable for several minutes.

Once removed, cleaning an EGR is not hard at all. Brake/carb cleaner, pipe cleaners and manually exercising the valve will usually do it. Pay particular attention to the pintle that closes the hole. Check the diaphragm as well. If it is broken; replacement is the only option. Finally, I would always clear a code like that and see if the trouble code returns. It may not.
