Default 2008 PT Cruiser Touring - radiator fan always on

hi everyone,
been reading the forums and searching around since last monday.
decided to post on my own before the car shop tears me a new one tomorrow ...

the problem i have: the radiator fan is always on.

it started with a drained battery, after it was replaced i noticed the fan went on as soon as i plugged the battery in.

i found this post:
Radiator fan always on high
and i replaced the relay (only had one), but that didn't work.

i saw a lot of posts where the fan didnt work at all, this isnt the case.

from one of the posts i saw that the low speed fan should barely make a noise, but this was on a 2005PT cruiser, not sure how mine should react.

the fan works, is loud and is constantly on.

any things i should do before taking it to the shop?
and if not, anything i should tell or look for while at the shop so i dont get ripped off?

thanks.

From The Car Connection:

There should be two fan relays. The high speed and low speed relays are side by side mounted to the fan shroud. Speaking from experience, i've never seen those relay's fail. generally the fan motors themselves fail...
Take the car to your friendly Dodge service center and have them hook up the DRB and they can activate the fans and relay circuit, this will also see if the fan motors are working,

A 2008 is going to use a StarScan, not a DRB

There is most likely a short somewhere and the fan is getting constant power. Pull the relay out. Does the fan stop? If so, your problem is the relay. If not, your problem is wiring.

thanks for the replies guys.

@heifetz17:
hmmmm, yes if i pull out the relay (red 50 amp), the fan will stop.
i did that yesterday, so i went ahead and bought a new one today and replaced and tested it out and problem still persisted (this was about 30 mins before i posted)
on my first post the statement "and i replaced the relay (only had one), but that didn't work." was based on that.
should i be doing anything else in regards to the relay.

@CREWZIN:
will a PepBoys do the trick?
reason being is it's 2 blocks from my place =P, so i was just going to drop off and walk back home, and bus to work.
if PepBoys is more expensive or if Dodge center is the way to go, i'll do it. i was just wondering if the first was a possibility at all.

thanks again!

Personally, I wouldn't trust Pep Boys to change my oil let alone trace down a fault in the wiring system, but the dealer is going to be expensive. Not a big choice.

As Chris (heifetz17) said and you already did change the relay. The fan is still running so it's in the wiring somewhere, might even be in the fan itself.

Ask Pep Boys if they do have a Star Scan (thanks for correcting that Chris) and if they do, as the write-up I posted says, it can activate the fan and circuits to help pinpoint the problem. If they don't, the dealer is the only way to go.

Does your radio stay on with key out?
Seems to me, you may have 2 problems -
1) something is telling fan to be on
2) the fan should only have power with key turned on

The good news is that the fan stops if the relay is pulled, so your fan is okay.

The way things are supposed to work is that the fan relay should only have power if key is turned on and the relay should only pass that power to the fan if it gets a high temp signal or a signal that the A/C is on.

Reason I asked about radio, is that it should go off without key also, so if it stays on, your igniton switch could be bad.

I'd look to have temperature sensor replaced with request to have the wires going to the sensor looked at very carefully, adn the wires feeding the fan looked at carefully...

@CREWZIN:
thanks for the advice, i'll see if Pep Boys has a StarScan.
i may end up settling for the dealer, i hate car headaches.

@quicksilverdon:
yes the radio stays on, but only untill i open the door. i thought that was normal though. so i turn off ignition (radio on), remove key (radio on), open door to exit (radio off). i do not know for how long it will stay on if i do not open the door.

i'll locate the closest service center and bring them a list of to-checks.

It's normal for your radio to stay on until you open the door. It's a programmable convenience feature and the default is 10 minutes or until a door is opened.

Pep Boys is not going to have a StarScan. It's a Chrysler specific diagnostic computer that costs upwards of $10k.

Check the power lead that the relay connects to. There could be a fault in the PCM that's supplying constant power to the fan.

How many miles are on your 2008? It may still be under warranty.

@heifetz17:
thanks for clarifying.
it has around 50k+ miles
how would i check the power lead? just plug a voltmeter on both ends and check for continuity? i'll have to open up that box then, right?

Connect the ground wire of your voltmeter to a good ground and the power wire to the power lead that the relay goes into. It should not be getting constant power.
