Default Radiator fan

Taliking about a 2001 Limited....Under what circumstance does the high speed radiator fan run? If the low speed fan fails should the high speed eventually turn on ?..I wasn't running the air conditioner, just sitting in traffic when blam! my car overheats.

Default Re: Radiator fan

The fan depends on a few different inputs including the relay, coolant temperature sensor and the computer itself. I believe it's the coolant temperature sensor that has the main job of telling the computer to switch to the high speed.

Your question, does the fan switch to high speed if the low speed fails; don't think so, but the coolant temperature will raise enough when the low speed fails to reach the point where the high speed will come on.

But, overheating can be cause by a number of things with the fan being the biggest culprit. Loss of coolant, trapped air in the system, clogged radiator, cracked head gasket are a few.

I found a fan motor replacement at a local parts store and now the car runs fine. I took an hour drive and the fan turned on and kept the temp down. I still don't understand why the high speed fan didn't turn on when the motor got really hot. I mean hot anti freeze was steaming from under the hood and the high speed fan never turned on.....

The fan motors taken apart by some of the members of this forum found that the brushes wore out. When they do, the motor stops working.
