Default Fault Code Retrieval

I tried to retrieve the fault codes on my 2006 non-turbo PT as per the instructions in the sticky "How to retrieve fault codes" but it did not work.

The instruction weren't hard to follow.
Turned the key 3 times in 5 seconds and left it in the forward position.
The only thing that shows is the mileage, the PRND lights, the seat-belt light, the temperature and direction and of course the "check engine" light.

Is there another way to get the codes without buying a scanner?

Thanks for all help.

That's weird, doesn't even say 'Done'?

Anyway, I remember Autozone being able to check it for free unless you're in the state of CA (against the law after a lawsuit). If not, ask to borrow one of their tools, it's free and all you have to do is leave your driver's license so do that and check it right then and there in the parking lot.

Thanks for the fast reply Kawizx9r

No I don't even get a "Done".

I live up in Canada and I do not think there is anything like Autozone up here.
And as far as I know no auto parts store around here will lend you a scanner for a few minutes. Although it would be a smart thing for them to do.

Any other way to check the codes?

Thanks again for all help.

I'm not getting any codes either. 2007 Canadian car. Once I got "------" where the odometer is

How far do I turn the key? OFF -- 1 -- 2 -- START

You have to turn the key a total of 4 times.
From off to "start" where "start" is the position of the key where all the dashboard warning lights come on.
Do not turn the engine on.
Turn the key 4 times.
The first time turn the key and let all the dashboard lights light up.
The 2nd, 3rd and 4th time you must turn the key rapidly so that these 3 turns take place within 5 seconds of each other.
However the dashboard warning lights should light up at each of these 3 turns or you have not turned the key far enough.

Once you have done the proper key sequence look where the mileage is and after a few seconds you will see the codes if there are any.
It takes a few seconds between codes so wait a bit and then a few seconds of the word "done" to show.
If you have no codes or the code is not retrievable you will see --------- and then the word "done"

Hope that helps.

Thanks bob2006

Tried it again and got it to work. I guess I wasn't waiting long enough after the "------" showed up the first time I tried. Anyway it said "done" so no codes but the check engine light is on. Guess I got to take it to a shop then

Take the negative battery cable off the battery for about 5 minutes. That will clear the fault light. When you re-attach the cable and start the car it might run ruff for about a minute while the computer re-learns things. Then see if the fault light comes back.

Haven't tried disconnecting the battery yet, I've only driven the car a couple times since the CHECK ENGINE light came on. This afternoon I went to the store and the light was still on, when I came out of the store about 10 mins later and started the car the light didn't come on.

What's happening???

You have an intermittent problem.
Not uncommon.
