Default Resistance to Acceleration

2005 PT Cruiser....
All of a sudden my engine light went on and when I pressed the gas pedal, the car lurched forward and pulled back. By relaxing the tension of the gas pedal, the car went forward without lurching. Yesterday, I went thru a lot of water. Could that be it? Or..... I drive a lot of the time on almost empty. What's going on?

If the engine light went on, the computer set a fault code that will help us help you diagnose the problem. Follow these instruction on how to obtain the fault code.

How to retrieve fault codes.

The code your getting, it sounds like you need to replace the Camshaft sensor but the symptoms your stating don't go along with what usually happens when the Camshaft sensor is going bad. It really sounds like you've done something to the fuel pump which is located on the bottom of the gas tank. We tell everyone NOT to drive with the gas very low because the fuel lubricates and cools the pump. It will and has burned out on some PT's. Letting the pump suck out the last drops of fuel could also mean that the pump sucked up debris that is on the bottom of the tank and has either clogged up the filter which is attached to the pump or the debris got thru the filter and made it's way up to the injectors and clogged one or more of them.

Going thru water, unless your talking about a large stream or small lake, shouldn't hurt but the lurching sounds like a fuel pressure problem and when you let upon the pedal, the engine needs less fuel and the lurching stops.
