Default How do I replace my alternator?

I have a 2004 turbo with just under 28K miles. The alternator (I think) has started "chirping". How do I replace it? Could it be a tensioner I am hearing?
David.

Personally, best thing to do if the alternator is bad is to take it to a trusted mechanic and let them change it out for you, unless you have the tools and expertise to remove and reinstall the passenger side drive axle.

Rebuilt alternator was something around $125, cost to have it installed was another $150.

The alternator has it's own belt and tightening system. The "chirping" could be that the belt needs tightening. There's no tensioner for that belt. Is the battery going dead? Is there an engine fault light coming on. Don't go buying a part until the noise is diagnosed. As Gary pointed out, take it to a mechanic to find the real problem.

if you have access to good tools and work space the job can be accomplished at home. You will need to remove the passenger side drive shaft in order to remove the alternator from the vehicle. The alternator is removed through the bottom of the vehicle once the drive shaft has been removed.
