Default Need new ignition cylinder, if I keep old key will car still start?

Hi all

2003 PT CRUISER CRD TOURING

I need to replace my ignition lock, as it keeps sticking, especially in very cold weather (anyone else had this?). My question is, if I keep the original key on my keyring, will the car still start ok? I've read a few posts about people struggling to reprogram key transponders, and don't want to be stuck without transport.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

You'd probably just have to try unless someone on here has done it. According to Chrysler, the transponder isn't in range of the sentry system until the key is inserted into the lock cylinder. Perhaps if the key is kept close enough to the cylinder it will work.

Thumbs up Re: Need new ignition cylinder, if I keep old key will car still start?

Cheers for the input Chris.

I guess we're thinking along the same lines there. I think the question is, will the unpaired new key, in any way interfere with the signal from the old key? Or does the fact that its unpaired mean that it won't? And I see what you mean about how close it's gotta be, may be that I'd have to tape it to the new key.

Thanks again.

Smifo,
In Feb 2010 I replaced the ignition lock on my 2002 PT (non-turbo 5 speed). It was sticking in cold weather, like yours, and one evening (at work), the key refused to turn at all. After a tow to the garage, the ignition lock was deemed faulty and replaced. I am still using the original keys with no issue, nothing was reprogrammed at all.

Ta for that BGW

I read somewhere that they put the immobiliser transponders in from 2003 onwards. Anyone know if this is accurate?

That's inaccurate. Transponder keys were used all the way from 2001 PTs.

Just have a locksmith re-key your new lock cylinder to your original key, or see if the dealer can order a cylinder already keyed to your original. Then you won't have to worry about an unpaired key in the first place.

Ta heifetz17

Have just sent an enquiry to an auto locksmith.

But the reason for my original question was obviously that I was trying to avoid using dealers or locksmiths. Dealer quoted me 150 ($200+), barrel off ebay is about $40.

Cheers

You could try spraying some graphite lube in the ignition lock..might free things up. I have used it on a stubborn locking gas cap..it's wet going on but quickly drys...smooth as silk now; Be careful though..it's very fine and BLACK and gets everywhere if you don't pay attention.
