Default '06 Cruiser Check Engine Light.

So this light has come on for the last couple of times out.
My manual says you have to have a code reader.
I tried to display the trouble codes by switching the IGN on-acc-on-acc-on but got nothing.
Can't afford a code reader right now but the car has to be in use.
Anybody have an idea?

Question Re: '06 Cruiser Check Engine Light.

if you are near a advance auto parts they will hook up a code reader free and if your engine check light is flashing dont drive it have a trusted mech look at it or have a dealership do the repairs.i hope it is somthing easy ,maybe someone else in this forum will come up with a better idea than i

autzone does it for free too. But i thought i had the same trouble with the key dance till i figured out that i had to turn the key one step further, the step right before the car turns on, which is the acc. so idk if that helps.

If done right, ALL pt's will show a code if the engine light is on. If there's no codes stored, it will say "done".

How to retrieve fault codes.

I didn't get a code but I did get a line of dots and after letting it set there for a minute it displayed DONE.
Whatever it was must have been a transient problem because a day later the Check Engine light went off and I understand that if no sensor fault is detected after three driving periods it will go out.

Yes, there's a couple of faults that after they are checked a couple times by the sensor the computer will turn off the engine light. The most prominent one is for the gas cap if it's not screwed on tightly after getting gas. Once it's tightened correctly, the light will go off but it might take a day or so.

Cool Re: '06 Cruiser Check Engine Light.

Of the three PTs I have had, the oldest, the 2006 na with 50K is the only one that has had the same problem.
It will come on occassionally for a couple of days; and then go away.
Every time I happen to be at the shop I have them check; and they don't even get a stored code.
I heard wayyyy back on an old thread that the 02 sensor can be something that causes this. That's what my service manager thinks.
But, he says, just run it until it gives me a problem, or gives a code.
I'll bet there are several transient "conditions" that do this, without giving a code.
