Default Wheel Bearing Replacement

Over the New Year weekend, I took on the challenge to replace my drivers' side front wheel bearing. Just in case you're wondering what's involved, I made a video of the adventure. Take it for what it's worth.

The adventure is broken into three videos:
1. Removing the steering knuckle (14 minutes).

2. Pressing the old bearing out and pressing the new bearing in (9 minutes).

3. Reinstalling the steering knuckle.

I've uploaded the first two videos but haven't edited the third one yet so I'm not ready to upload it. I suppose you could just play video 1 backwards...

The screen play was based on the writing of Swanson's Wheel Bearing Adventure.

Thanks for the replies!

I finally finished editing the final video but it's still a little heavy weighing in at just under 15 minutes. This is part 3 where I reinstall the knuckle.

I hope this is helpful!

After getting all of this done, my PT drives well and no longer howls from a worn bearing. It's humorous to me that I didn't notice the humming and howling until I decided to drive one day without my radio blaring! The radio seems to "fix" many vehicle problems.

It's now in the HOW TO part of the Tech & Performance section.

Thanks.

Thank you for the kind words! I've got to thank the many posters in this forum for sharing their tips and techniques to keep my PT healthy. I really did no more than that which I read and learned in this forum. Crewzin's posts helped me through many occasions.

As for time spent to do this job, I can only guess since I spread it out over three days working a little at a time and taking many breaks to come back here and read a little more. I'm guessing that if I worked straight through the process (now that I know what to expect), each part might take:
* remove knuckle - 1 to 2 hours;
* remove & replace bearing - about an hour;
* replace knuckle - 1 to 2 hours.

I feel like I could do the job in a day with time to spare if I weren't so darned infected with OCD.

One tool that I don't have that would have made the chore MUCH easier would be a super huge bearing splitter (~ 9" bearing splitter) but those things are well over $100! Of course, if you skip the middle step & just take it to a machine shop you don't have to worry about any special tools.

Thanks again.

Poncho,

I want to thank you for this video. I just successfully changed both driver and passenger side bearings in my PT and your video was a life saver. It showed perfectly how to do the job. Thank you!
