Default Starter Smoking

This morning I was getting ready to go to school when my 2006 PT 2.4L non-Turbo, auto trans wouldn't start. The engine kept turning but never started, then my starter began to smoke. I assume that I need a new starter. If anyone else has any other insight let me know. I was also looking for that repair manual on the site but can't seem to find it anywhere, all the links for it appear to be dead

As far as the repair manuals go, well, those were posted inappropriately as they bust copyright by doing that. See my PM.

As to your starter, have you had your car in deep water or deep snow lately? Have you had any previous starting problems? Has anyone ground the starter on the flywheel while the engine was running?

There are many factors that can cause your starter to have these problems, some can be very serious. Flywheel frozen up keeping the starter from turning is one of the worst, but not often encountered.

you haven't stated the mileage or if the timing belt has been changed.
my bet is the timing belt, especially if it turned over faster than usual.

The smoke might just have been moisture turned to steam - does starter still work now that it's cooled off? Did car start?
