Default Engine top end rattle/knocking

Hey, i just bought a 2003 PT cruiser GT with 125,000 miles ive had it for about a week now. it was quiet when i bought it. when i was coming home the engine started making a loud knocking/rattling noise in the top end. It sounds just fine idling and idles great once i rev it and hold it a 2500 rpm and above its there and loud.
also after it started doing this the engine light came on with P0171 lean mix.

i have
changed oil and filter
removed p/s belt to see if that stopped the noise.

i was thinking about taking off the valve cover and see what i find.

any other ideas?

You've only had it for a week. Was it sold "as is"? Sounds like it might have been fixed up to sell by masking a major problem enough so that it ran OK for a couple weeks before it showed it's true colors.

With that kind of mileage, did you have it checked out by someone who knows what to look for?

yes it was sold as-is.
when i got it it had been sitting for 6 months started every once and a while (he said)
before i had bought it he told me it needed a new power steering pressure line because the old one leaked so when i got it back home i put a new p/s line on and belt and tensioner and everything was happy until now i have put 400 miles on it since i have had it. then it started with the noise.

Well, a rattling/knocking noise isn't good but I guess you already know that. Hopefully it may be just a broken spring or something that would mean you don't have to tear down the engine.

Valvetrains are VERY reliable.
A rod knock on these engines sounds alot like top end noise.
You might remove the oilpan and take a look at the rod bearings if you
can on this vehicle.

Uptown i agree rod knock could very well be the answer to the problem. especially since it only appears at higher rpm, the lower rpm will mask the sound a little. You can drop the pan it not easy but can be done by removing a few surrounding parts. Once removed you can inspect the rod ends however they are protected by the lower sub frame from the bottom.

You can check them but probably wont be able to replace them from the bottom, might need some input from other members here.

ok so i pulled the pan and found that the rod bearings are good they only have a little movement side to side but are solid up and down.
I pulled the valve cover and didnt find nothing wrong in there either.
I checked the turbo bearing and it felt solid.

so before this sound came about i gotten a cat back exhaust on the pt from an exhaust shop because it was straight piped but the shop put on a turbo muffler but they told me where the exhaust connects to the manifold it was missing a bolt and sounded like it was leaking. i told them it would be alright for now.
but it started making this noise 1 day after the exhaust was put on so im thinking from the backpressure of the new exhaust it finally caused that exhaust gasket to blow and it is just echoing so on monday im going to get a gasket and another bolt and see if that fixes the problem.

it happened to my 86 toyota pickup 22r and it made it sound like top end noise.
does that sound like it could possibly be the problem?

Sounds possible, and if not, at least you'll have the exhaust all fixed.
