Default Auto Trans problem? Engine revs, no go

2002 PT Cruiser Limited auto trans problem. Other night check engine light came on then engine revs up but car slows down. Acts like trans is in neutral. Coasted to a stop. Engine would not engage trans in any gear including Reverse. If I turned off car for a few minutes, I could restart car, rev engine and get it to engage trans to move car about 15 feet then it would disconnect and rev again. I could do this repeatedly. Any ideas? Thanks

Transmission is shot. Mine went out on the 2002 with 47,000 miles. It was rebuilt because I had a extended warranty, my cost $100.

If your check engine light came on then you should have thrown some codes. Do the key dance and find out what codes you're showing and go from there. There are too many issues that this could be. There is a "limp" mode that the PT will go into if the computer see's major trouble, allowing you to barely get your car home, this may be what you're experiencing. If you can't do the key dance, are you close enough to an auto parts store to get it there? I know that, down the street from me, both Advance and Napa auto parts do the OBDii read for free to help you diagnose your issues.

Either way, I'd not jump to any conclusions until you read your DTC's.

Error code is P 0700 which appears to be the Transmission computer.

Thanks for the replies.

I get a P0700 code.
It says on one list I found that it has to be read out via the ISO, forgot the spec.
Do I have to put it on a computer at a service facility?

The P0700 code is a generic for something wrong with the transaxle. As you found out, you need to go deeper. Anyone with and OBDII scanner can hook up to the car and get a more pinpoint definition of what's wrong. Dealer or technician at most garages.

Turbo; did you check the tranny fluid level per owners manual?
