Default Sensor Issue with my 2005 PT Cruiser

In November 2010, I replaced a cam sensor in the car. Just last week, the car died again on me, bucking, loss of power, backfiring. The car had to be towed to my mechanic. Driving home this evening, again the check engine light came on and the same symptoms again. I was able to get the car back to the mechanic. Any suggestions on what is causing the sensors to go bad? I believe the first error code was 340 and last weeks was 343. Not sure what the scan will be tomorrow when they check it. Help, I love my car but am now afraid to drive it.

Shhaaaaaaa-aaaa-aaaaarie bayaby....lol...

Question, when you replaced your cam sensor, did you buy an ebay piece of did you get an authentic oem sensor? The reason I ask is it sounds to me exactly like the faults being discussed over at ptcrew with some members who used after-market sensors. They simply don't last. Wondering also if your mech knows what he/she's doing and had it installed properly...

He's a great mechanic, but I was wondering myself. The initial part he installed was under warranty so he did not charge me for replacing it, and he just figured the part was bad. Would I do better at a Chrysler dealer?
It is such a beautiful car, and I searched the US for it. Cool Vanilla. 2005 Convertible, Turbo Touring edition. I am the second owner. Purchased with 40000 miles, now has 53000 miles.

You would be better off getting the sensor from the Chrysler dealer. For some reason these cars dont like aftermarket sensors.

Keep your mechanic, have him get the part from dealer.

They replaced the sensor again, drove it and the check engine light went on again. Took t to the dealer, they replaced the crank shaft sensor. I picked up the car and drove it about three miles and the check engine light is now on again. Back to the dealer it goes. Unfortunately, this time maybe for good. I love my car but can't keep going at this rate with the repairs.

Do the key dance and get the codes.

P0340 is the cam sensor signal. Maybe you have an issue with the wiring or connector.

Also as others mention, always buy sensors for the dealer. they cost more but tend to be of higher quality.

If they changed the crank sensor after replacing the cam sensor with a mopar unit then they should check the harness. If the cam sensor is the one your tech used and is still an aftermarket I would swap that myself with a Chrysler one. Also disconnect the battery to clear the code.
