Talking New guy!

Hello!
I'm new here.
I am a student at University of Arkansas in Fort Smith, Ar
I'm going for an Associates in General Technology, specializing in automotive.
The state was kind enough to pay for my school, books, and tools since my job left me and went to Mexico.

I just bought a non-turbo '02 PT Cruiser with automatic for $1000. It has a knock in the bottom end.
Auto Zone has a crank kit for around $270.

Now, I've heard the engine can come out through the top or the bottom.
Does anyone here have any expierience in this area?
I have any and all tools necessary for the job, including a two post lift...
My question is, which is easier? Top or bottom?

If I was to pull it out of the top,
does the engine and trany come out together or is it possible to leave the trany in place and just pull the engine?

Any other interesting information I should be aware of in this process?

Thanks guys!
Looking forward to working with you!

Welcome to the Forum!!

You didn't say how many miles, but at around 100,000 the timing belt should be changed and as you are already in there change the water pump and tensioner as well. rockautoparts.com has a kit with all necessary parts needed.
