Default timing belt, how long will it last on 2.4 engine

Hi All,

Have a 2003 GT with 2.4l turbo. I purchased car at 96k from neighbor who drove car all highway miles. (worked night shift at factory 70 miles round trip). Car now has 103k, and I only drive 11 miles daily.

Price to replace WP and timing belt is $1000. The owners manual said to replace at 90k. Since overdue, but I only drive less than 60 miles a week. Do you think I can post-pone replacement until July? I have started to save up for the repair bill, as do not wish to put on a charge card. An expense that I really do not need at this time.

Mechanic at Sears said should be fine to wait a few months as he said all should be fine if driven locally and driven gently. He did highly recommend that I perform this service.

Can anyone tell me how many miles they got out of their timing belts?

thanks

you might be fine, however, you have to take into consideration, when it does go you will most likely be stranded, towing charges, frustration, etc.

i would have it replaced before the above happens. and, not by sears. but that's just me.

well the general rule is 100,000 some go quicker we had one lady "MOM" who clamined to get almost 170,000 but the notral is at 100.000 and most do it between 90,000 and 100,000 I did mine at like 96,000
its NOT a interfreacnce engin so you wont smack your pistons btu it will be a pain and when it goes it will most likely be the worst time it can be adn the car is totaly dead
One more thing while you are in there no matter what any one says you need to change the tensioner and the water pump you are already there and it will be just as expensive to do it over when they go bad

Some shops will let you bring in your own parts and you can save a bunch IF they will do that btu some wont the parts are under $300

It's overdue to get changed so you might be ok for a few months and maybe you won't. With the little amount of driving you do and you do it easy you should be ok for a couple of months.........or not.

UptownSport is right again. I hate it---he's always right!!!

It's great to have someone with his "font" (my strange word for the day) of knowledge on this site.

Jerry, fount like "fountain"!!

OP Check out rockauto.com for parts, they carry a kit which includes all parts needed. The normal labor is 6 hours to replace all.

Nope. It's "font". It means--- fountain; source--- as in a flowing fountain (source) of knowledge.

Tomorrow the word will be "hobble-de-hoy". No fair looking it up.

If you think I'm always right ... You's got problems

Shoulda seen the time I drove my Infantry Company's 5-ton. Got it parked,
didn't know how to shut it off, so I pulled the cutoff.

I spent an hour, in the dark, in Kosovo resetting the emergency kill.

I guess if the turbocharger starts leaking, the engine can actually runaway
on the oil, so it needs a damper/shutter.

And there's reason behind my comments:

Experience.

New Pt Water pump w/ 30k miles. Owner 'junked' the vehicle.
