Question Service Engine Soon Light

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and welcome any and all replies to this post.

My "check engine light soon" came on 3 days ago. I took it to AutoZone and had the diagnostics run. The first cause was a gas cap malfunction, so I replaced the gas cap.

I asked the service rep when the light would go off. He told me that it would in a couple of days, and if it didn't to come by in a week and he could advise me further.

Does this make any sense? It seems to me that if the gas cap was the problem, the "check engine light" would go off as soon as that gas cap was replaced.

Any thoughts on this?

disconnect the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes. that should clear the code.

Welcome to the forum.

...and you probably didn't need a new gas cap. If you don't turn the cap at least 3 clicks after filling it with gas, the light will probably come on. If you tighten it again (3 clicks), the light will go off as white just said. Sometimes it takes a few day. Depends on how many times you start the car.

Of course AutoZone won't tell you all this. They diagnose the code and sell you a part.

Next time you get the light, come here first. We'll tell you how to read the code and hopefully tell you what's wrong and how to fix it.

cruserdad, it may be a store policy I noticed they dont do it unless you specfically ask them to clear the codes. Even then they ask for confirmation that you want them to, they may have had some complaints over unintended code clearly at some point.

I had a little better luck at Autozone they did not reset the code, but also did not sell me a gas cap. The nice lady said to make sure it clicks a few times and wait. It also took over a week for it to go out. I had left my cap off for a hundred mile trip with a couple of stops. I did the same thing a year later and again the light took almost 2 weeks to go off. but I don't driver very often, but when I do it is for long trips. I left it off for another long trip but caught it when I stopped with no stops in between and the light did not come on. So it appears that the cap must be loose, or off, for multiple trips for the code to be set.
