Default 2001 power steering niose

Hello all,
We are the proud new owners of a 2001 PT cruiser with 75xxx kms on it. The car performed flawlessly when we test drove it. We hit a cold spell after buying the car and began to experience loud nioses from the steering when the car is cold. The fluid level is fine. The owners manual (page 214) warns against using ATF and says to see the dealer for the correct fluid.
What are you using for PS fluid (in what year of cruiser)?
Has anyone tried the amsoil synthetic fluid (may perform better cold)?
Is there a prefferred method of replacing the fluid?
Thanks for the replies.

Mine was making a horrendous noise in the cold (and on start up). When it was in the repair shop having a few things done, I told the mechanic and he found that the pump was leaking. He put some fluid in the system which sealed the pump and also got rid of the noise completely. No idea what it is (the bill says power steering fluid) just some new stuff that he'd been recommended. I was really surprised that it fixed the leak and the noise, as similar 'snake oil' for radiators and gaskets seldom work IMO.

Red, I have a 2003 non-turbo Limited Edition. The owner's manual says to ONLY put ATF+4 in the reservoir. However, the older models may have had a different fluid.

Note that I said ATF plus four (ATF+4). Not just any old ATF ....

2001's used something different than ATF-4. They changed over to ATF-4 either late in the 2001 run or with the 2002's if I recall correctly.

Thanks for the replies, the manual calls for ATF+4 for the auto trans but does not specify the power steering fluid. The noise it at its worst in cold weather when the car is first started. I will keep an eye on the fluid level to see if there is a leak.
