Cool Gas Mileage - SHOW ME THE FACTS!

Got into a little disagreement with a co-worker over the pros and cons of 100% gas versus the 10% ethanol.
I made the assertion that 10% ethanol burns hotter, and provides lower gas mileage.
We have discussed this in several recent threads - with some of you techies providing your OPINIONS!
But, I need some facts.
Got any facts, links???

Not exactly the argument. Alcohol replaced MBTE, an oxygenate.
So 'pure' gas vs. gasohol is moot.
It's like arguing leaded vs unleaded, purely academic.
Alcohol is what you get unless you want to run LP, E-85 (more of our beloved
alcohol), diesel, natural gas, electric or kerosene.

I suppose you could get a horse, so hay could be added to the list!

Thumbs up Re: Gas Mileage - SHOW ME THE FACTS!

No so Uptown.
Two of Crewzin's links are two good scientific tests - one by Edmonds.....with a thorough discussion of the complications of a comparison.

Sooner, I can only tell you what happened to me and my Subaru when the gas changed over in California to a year-round 90/10% formulation.

When gas was just gas, I got 35MPG on the highway (the Subaru was just a 1.8 lt. engine). When California mandated 10% alcohol (MBTE, whatever), my highway mileage went down to 29MPG (still good but not as good as it was).

I can't remember what my MPG's were in the city. Probably because I only counted miles and gallons when on a long trip (highway miles). But my point is this: I lost MPG's.

That's okay, though. The smog in California was getting very bad, and now--even with more cars on the road--we have cleaner air. I'm willing to pay for that ....

Alcohol can be made of just abut anything, anywhere.
Inmates make it in their commodes out of scraps...

E-85's taken the place of competition fuels, $16 a gallon vs $3 gallon.

You can run a competition engine on the street with the fuel,
it back to the 60's. Do this with your Arab fuel.
If your idea of a vehicle's a suburban or Yukon- You needen't be
involved in your own discussion.

Alcohol, whether ethanol or methanol - should be where we're headed. As noted, it can be made from "waste" - like the corn stalks, not the kernels, or wood chips (cellulosic alcohol).
There is only so much petroleum, being used at an increasing rate, so better to find a replacement.
I believe in the future people will look back in wonder that we used oil for fuel - because there are many other fuels, but oil as a lubricant and plastics feedstock are not so easy to replace.
Indy cars have run on alcohol for years.

And, while we are facing a huge debt - Exxon-Mobil and Texaco (along with GE & others) paid ZERO US taxes - thanks to having bought many members of Congress....
