Default No power behind air blowing out of vents

Tonight we turned on the car and flipped on the heat to absolutely no power. We drove it anyway and eventually we could feel air coming out but with no power.

My first guess would be the blower motor? I believe this means tearing into the dash on the passenger side?

I'd like to avoid the mechanic as we don't know one we can trust in the area and I really don't want to drop a ton of money. I've got less than 3 weeks until my husband deploys and I'm on my own with the baby so if I can't fix it in 3 weeks I'll have to pay the price or if it's not going to damage anything I can drive it to Arizona (from Nebraska) and have my dad babysit while I fiddle with the car.

I'd appreciate any and all help I can get!

We need these to make blower work:
Voltage
intact wiring
functional switch
the resistor thingy in the plenum
and a good blower motor.

Simplest is to get a cheapie voltmeter from Sears.
Test at blower first, it's likely the EZest to get at. Yes, you'll be in an
awkward position.

Ask one of the guys to get you a FSM (Factory Service Manual) in pdf
format. It'll tell you the procedure for your model and year, and access to
these components.

Here's an '01 blower, most vehicles are similar, Some GM's put the blower in the engine bay.

Please excuse the shakes, 10 second exposure. Location of four 5/16 or 8mm screws. Use a Craftsman/Snap-on 1/4" ratchet and 8mm or 5/16 socket.
You may have to finagle the hamster cage out, pull back carpet a bit.
The connector has a red lock you have to pull or push to get the simple latch to work.
They only put these 'locks' where:
1. it's absolutely needless
2. Impossible to get at.
3. The connector get old and brittle and breaks trying to undo lock (Fuel injectors).
Dunno why I wrote 'Red' in the screw box. Ignore.

Blower removed.

Box- Reach hand into hole, you can feel the fins and debris. BIG snakes live in these boxes ...
I was only bit once this time.

Debris.

Cost:
Ratchet, socket, snake bite kit.

Takes less than 1 hour.

I really appreciate your detailed response, thank you!

Were you kidding about the snake? That alone is worth the cost of a mechanic in my eyes.

Sorry for sounding a total girl... but well, I am!

I'm sorry if I offended you. Subaru has a recall because the yellow spiders are weaving webs in the vents, they are to be removed by Subaru.

wow. I spent a lot of time explaining it to you, the section containing the
snake bit was from another post.

I'd suggest taking it to the Chrysler dealer.

You're drowning, but don't like our rope.

As stated - I appreciate the explanation, especially that it's detailed.

I had no idea the "snake thing" was from another post, nor any idea what the "spider" thing was about. It came across as though I was being made fun. If that wasn't the intent, I apologize.

I purchased the $105 blower motor yesterday.

I'm about to tackle the fix now. Hopefully it goes well and my daughter and I have heat back in the car soon. It's still winter in Nebraska and it's freezing.

I thought that was a joke.
