Default K&N air Filter Help

Hi I have a 2005 cruiser with a 2.4L and I wana give it some kick, Is the cold air intake air filter kit by K&N worth $300 or will the K&N air filter that goes in the stock compartment work well enough?

I got my K&N FIPK used (they last forever, just clean the filter) and paid a lot less.
here's something to read:

I too have a K&N FIPK setup, however if I could go back I would've kept my stock airbox (with drop-in K&N filter with less than 200 miles) and done the airbox mod.

Here's my setup, and oh btw make sure you put on that CARB sticker if you do get an aftermarket intake -

Get the drop in. You don't suck hot engine air and lose torque.

I just added the drop in (haven't done the airbox mod yet) it was the best money I've spent!

Ditto! Actually a K&N rep at the Autofair in Lowes Motor Speedway suggested I drop my FIPK and go with the dropin, so I did.

You'll need to, at least, do the 3" inlet tube mod to see the most change in performance with stock box and K&N drop-in. Even then it's a barely noticable change, but it's there and you get rid of that giant restriction at the the end of the stock inlet tube. The bellmouth on the stock tube helps, but not much on an opening that small. By the way, to make it closer to a "cold air" intake, you'll need to block off the opening to the engines hot air that is just a couple inches away from the stock inlet-to-fenderwell entry.

A couple pics of it done. The second hood is in the one pic. I don't have pics of it installed, but it should be self explanatory.
