Welcome to the forum.

How about a little bit more information. You say it's an 01. What is the mileage, when were the wires and plugs last changed? Any other motor work done in the last few months? Is the engine light on to give you any fault codes?

OK, some places to start and another big question. Has the timing belt been changed? The timing belt is way past due (around 100K).

Without knowing when the last time the plugs and wires were changed, it's a good time (now that your having problems) to buy some decent ignition parts and replace what you have. That may or may not solve your problem but you won't know till you try. We have guides to help you change everything and they're written for your cruiser exactly, 2001, since they change some parts after that.

That, my friend, is the $1000 question because unless you have some really good mechanical experience, that's what it's going to cost you.

Parts are about $300 give or take. We recommend the water pump, tensioner (since they change to a new type in 2003) and both drive belts (serpentine and alternator). A good mechanic would take about 5 to 7 hours to change the belt and depending on the hourly rate, there's where the expense comes in. Anywhere from $800 to $1200 for the whole thing ....unless you can find a really good price somewhere....and a word of advice; just because a mechanic gives a good price, if he's never did the timing belt on a PT before, don't let him practice on yours.

OK, let us know how it works out. Hopefully the new ignition parts will do it.

We have a lot of threads about the timing belt and a few guys here who have done it and willing to answer any questions you have when you decide to take on that.
