Default Head gasket ?

My wife has a 2001 2.0litre auto cruiser.
It seems to use not leak water, always low or non exist coolant in the separate coolant tank. Heater now blowing cold air and bubbling noise in the engine. It doesn't over heat ever but I don't know what's wrong with it, either air lock or head gasket how do I find out if it's one or the other, thanks

besides the obvious external leaks in the cooling system there are also internal leaking possibilities. The coolant leaks into the cylinders and is burnt up under normal driving. Usually boiling or bubbling of the coolant in the radiator ro coolant overflow tank is from gases being blown up from combustion chamber. Resolution would be to replace the head gasket, unfortunately. A compression check between cylinders will identify where the leak is.

While you do not see the white cloud as we did years ago before the cat converter vaporized the water and steam, the cat can not hide the smell. Put some antifreeze in and see if you can smell a sweet acrid smell from the exhuast after warming up.

I drove my 95 Sportage with a blown gasket for almost a year smelling just a whiff of antifeeze only when stopped a long time occasionally. It was brought about by an oil change place nicking a cooling line which blew 3 days later, dealer replaced line but must not have check gasket as I requested. This car did all the things 4x4safari said with regards to radiator.
