I know why

1. Verry heavy car
2. No aerodynamics---built like a heavy brick
3.Underpowered
4 A weak tranny that being a auto sucks even more
5. the 2.4 in the PT is Not a high MPG engine

Bottom line is you are getting the best you will get--ok so will say you can get 28 all I can say is I drive a 06 95% highway synthetic oil K and N air filter auto tranny 116,000 running a tad over inflated tires and keeping it around 70-75 and I get 21 almost every day

It is what it is
a fun to drive cool looking car and has a ton of inside room

What are your RPM's at 65mph? My PT is 2500rpm. I am just trying to figure out why such a wide range of MPG's. The Automatic shouldn't suck that much gas mileage. 1 or 2 MPG sure, but 7....8....9mpg compared to a manual?

Maybe its the auto, gear ratio, combined with wide tires....etc

You actually know people wiht Manual Tranny in a PT that get 7 - 9 MPG better than Auto?

I will have to enter the fray here and question why mine sucks so much! I thought the fact that I drive it hard was one of the reasons my manual tranny consistently get 20+-1MPG City, about 1-2 MPG lower than my kids Auto, but if I am supposed to be getting 27-30 city then there is a problems.

Just Kidding, I don't ever recall seeing anyone post a city MPG over 24 from any PT cruiser with the 2.4L engine.
