Default 2003 PT Cruiser 2500 RPM Limit/Engine Shut Down

I have been reading a lot about the PT Cruiser 2500 RPM limitation. I have a 2003 PT Cruisier with manual transmission that has the same problem. I have notice the following with the car since this problem started:
1. The 2500 RPM limit is not 100 percent of the time. May happen today and tomorrow the car runs fine.
2. It seems to never happen before the enigne has warmed to normal operating temp.
3. The check light may or may not be on prior to the 2500 limit being imposed. If the check light was off it will come on.
4. Shutting the car off and letting it cold for four on more hours hides the problem for a short while.

Possible causes:
It seems no one on this forum has successfully fix this problem. Let me explain why (I think). Many autos now have this limp mode feature (2500 rpm limit) to prevent you from getting stranded when the engine over heats. I believe the ECU thinks the engine is over heating so the ECU limits the power of the engine to prevent an over heated engine. Note: there are at least two engine cut relays. As soon as I find the others this problem can be by passed.

Do the key dance to see if you have any codes so we can get an idea of your problem...Key dance: Put key in ignition, turn it ON, OFF, ON, OFF, and ON...then read the codes...

Ohh when I say ON, do not start the car, just move the key until you see all the lights on the dash

I'll bet it is your Camshaft Position Sensor .... It's a 10 minute job and that included the test drive around the block and the beer after the job is done. Mine behaved the same way when it went out, couldn't get it over 2500 rpm and no power. Get the codes and get the part at the dealer, people have reported having mixed results with electrical parts from other sources.

I was going to say the same thing but I just wanted to make sure it's the camshaft sensor

I am having this exact problem with my 03 pt. I just replaced the camshaft sensor and now it starts but it still shutting down at 2500 rpm. So for us it's not a camshaft issue. Help!!

Is your engine light on? If so what are the codes?

I would first suggest checking the camshaft wire and connector going to the camshaft sensor.

How many miles do you have on the engine? Has the timing belt been replaced?

If the connector and wire is good then I would suggest checking to see if the new camshaft sensor is bad.

I would check under the car to see if the
wiring harness that runs to the crankshaft
sensor is rubbing the Axel shaft....
(this happened to ours a couple years back..)
..also if you replaced the cam sensor..
you may want to replace the magnet..
I just replaced all 3 items with OEM PARTS ONLY
(cam sensor,magnet & crankshaft sensor)
on our car...
but the car told me each time..
what to replace..with the key dance..

Unfortunately, mine had the exact same symptoms, but it was the crank sensor!
Lots more work to get to.
Not a DIY for me!
