Default Doing timing belt and water pump in a few days. Wish me luck.

I will be doing the timing belt and water pump in my daughters 2004 PT Cruiser Touring Edition with the Turbo in a couple of days. I hope I have everything. I have read and will need to read again all the steps. I just hope all goes well. If there are any tips that anyone would like to give me I would appreciate it.

Never did one but from what I hear it's not a pleasant job, so good luck. Take pictures.

No matter if you line up your factory timing marks, before you take off your old belt! mark you cam, crank and counter shaft gears on them self's and the the side of the block with some kind of grease pencil, paint marker, sharpie, what ever your flavor. to make sure you get it back right! Otherwise you'll have to do it twice! just my 2 cents! that way there is no question whether you got it right, you have 2 different reference points to be sure!

Good luck!

You are right fabreezai...do that and you can do like I usually do: make a couple of marks on each gear and on the old belt, then you put the old belt in top of the new and you transfer the marks....that way you are 100% sure you time is perfect
Also, you don't need to disconnect the AC lines and make sure you disconnect the downpipe and the driver side motor mount.
Ohhh and if you need a Chrysler crankcase pulley tool, you can borrow one from Autozone.....

Thanks, I will remember to mark the belt and sprockets before removing the old belt.

XtrmDC2 disconnect the drivers side motor mount? None of the service manuals or steps I have read suggest this. Does it just make it easier on the Turbo's? What is involved to take the drivers side motor mount off?

Thanks.

You need to disconnect the driver's side mount to be able to move the engine to that side, to get move clearance to remove everything...It's only two bolts under the air filter box to disconnect it.

Maybe a silly question, but what's the use of marking the belt???

Let me explain Chromenut: You make a couple of marks on the old belt and on each pulley...then you remove the old belt and you put it in top of the new one and you transfer the marks exactly...then, when you put the new belt, you match all the marks ...that way you are 100% sure you did not skip a tooth and its right on timing...
It's an old trick but I use it all the time...

Here is a better explanation....its for an Elantra but you'll get the idea.

Go to step 4, under the "gear puller" picture.

OHHHH I get it, okay, gotcha, instead of just marking the block or whatever, mark the belt too. Got it, good idea!!! Never thought of that, if the marks line up on the belt and the block, little chance you're off.

Great idea.
