Default Steam through the A/C vents

This is an addition to my thread "Overheating mystery". I forgot to add that along with the overheating, steam was coming out of the A/C vents.
Does that help to narrow down what may be happening?
I didn't have the A/C on at the time.
Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

If the A/C was ON, I'd say you have a malfunctioning recycling valve but since you say it wasn't on...I don't know.

Heater core came to mind, but there is no leaks inside or outside or under the car. I assume if it was the core, the water/anti freeze would have to go somewhere?

Yeah, you'd like you'd notice the smell being other than just water.
