Default Engine Sputtering

2002 PT Cruiser,
engine starts to sputter when its about to shift (its an automatic) when i give it a little more gas it will shift into the next gear.
While going uphill, when it should downshift it will sputter again like its confused, the check engine light will come on, eventually it will downshift. When it gets leveld out the light will go off.
Any ideas?

How many miles? Have the plugs and wires been changed with anything but OEM wires? Have you tried the key dance per instructions in the Performance section?

BTW: welcome to the Forum!!!

Its got 118,463 miles on it, i havnt had a tune up in 80k (my boyfriend is still rolling his eyes at me on that one) , i tried to see if there are any 'codes' i just cant seem to get anything, doesnt even say 'done' like another post said it would if there were no codes. Maybe im just not doing it right, i followed the post, it said, turn the key forward 3 times in under 5 seconds an on the 3rd turn leacve it there and the codes will pop up on the odometer, just must not be doing it right, ill try again.

Danny got these numbers, 358531, EE08, FL 0008, BL 01, none of them are on the forum codes section. He said i needed to push in the odometer trip button and my gauges went all crazy, i didnt know you could do that. But when he did the regular test with the key it just said 'done'

Sara, when you push in your odometer trip button, all that happens is that it tests your gages. The DONE shows that NO codes were saved. I would remove the negative cable for about 5 minutes and then reattach. While that is going on, I also would replace your plugs, many have used Champion 7570 and also replace your plug wires. If you are not sure how to do this look in the performance section "Changing plugs & wires". Good luck!!

These are your software and firmware revisions, not the codes.
