Default 2002 PT Cruiser LE A/C question

I have a 2002 LE Cruiser with 150,000 miles. I recently had the low speed fan replaced because my car was overheating while driving at low MPH. Two weeks ago I attempted to use the A/C. The only thing I got was warm air. I took it back to the mechanic and he checked it out. He told me that I needed to add refrigerant to the system. He said he could charge me $XX or I could purchase a recharge kit and do it myself. I opted to do it myself. When I first hooked the gauge up to the low pressure port I got close to nothing for a reading. I added enough refrigerant to get the gauge reading within normal and checked to see if it was blowing cold. It was not. I can hear the compressor engaging, which it wasn't doing prior to adding refrigerant. I'm a little perplexed as to why the compressor would engage and I'm still not receiving cold air. Any troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

I guess the proper answer would be I don't know. The last time I used the A/C was September 2010, but I didn't attempt to use it in the time between then and a couple of weeks ago. It's not something I even think about during Mid-Missouri winters.

Yes but you should no matter how cold it is. The seals tend to dry out if the A/C isn't used. Once a month at least for half an hour. If it's too cold, stand out side the car and let it run.

When you charged it did the lines hold the pressure or did freon just leak out? I'm dealing with a/c issues also I had the a/c suction line(automatic trans) replaced $$$ and within 12 hours of charging the system, I've found out I have another leak(freon drips from the bottom of the compressor that's hidden by the lower radiator hose). Is there a list of steps to get to the compressors on the turbos? I'd like to try and fix this myself, tired of handing out money over & over again! Keep us updated on your situation.
